Generation Zero drops you onto the Swedish island of Östertörn in 1989, coming home from a trip to find every house empty, the radio silent and the roads patrolled by machines that hunt anything that moves. Developed by Systemic Reaction, the Avalanche Studios label behind the Apex Engine, this stealth-action shooter turns a vast, quiet open world into a guerrilla campaign against a mechanical army, playable solo or with up to three friends in seamless co-op.

A Cold War Sweden Gone Silent

Östertörn is a huge stretch of pine forest, farmland, fishing villages and coastal highways, all rendered in the muted colors of a Swedish autumn. Cars sit abandoned in driveways, dinners are left half eaten, and the only sounds are wind, distant gunfire and the hydraulic whine of something walking through the trees. Beneath the countryside lies a network of military bunkers, command centers and safehouses left over from the Cold War, and each one holds weapons, ammunition and pieces of the story of the night the machines arrived. The atmosphere does much of the work here: a synth-driven soundtrack and long, tense stretches of exploration make every encounter feel earned.

Know Your Enemy

The machines are not simple bullet sponges. Each class fills a role, and each is built from destructible components you can target to change a fight.

Ticks and Seekers Small scouts that skitter through buildings or drift overhead scanning for movement. A Seeker that spots you will call in heavier patrols, so silencing it first is often the difference between a clean ambush and a running battle across open fields. Runners and Hunters Dog-like Runners move in packs and close distance fast, while the humanoid Hunters carry rifles, grenade launchers and enough armor to punish careless approaches. Both can be crippled piece by piece: shoot off a weapon mount, burst a fuel cell or blind a sensor and the fight changes shape. Harvesters and Tanks Harvesters roam the countryside gathering resources under Hunter escort, and the towering Tank brings mortars, miniguns and gas dispensers to bear. Taking one down means planning, positioning and the right ammunition rather than a straight firefight.

Fight Like a Guerrilla

You are outgunned from the first minute, so Generation Zero rewards tactics over reflexes. Boomboxes, flares, fireworks and radios pull machines away from your route or into a killzone you have prepared with gas canisters and explosives. Firearms range from a hunting rifle and a battered pistol to the HP5 submachine gun, the AI-76 assault rifle and the Pansarvärnsgevär 90 recoilless rifle, each found in several quality tiers and fitted with scopes, suppressors and specialized ammunition. As you gain experience, a skill tree lets you build toward stealth, marksmanship, survival or support roles, and scavenged machine parts feed a crafting system for equipment, weapons and ammunition. You can also establish and fortify your own bases across the island, turning captured ground into a foothold for the resistance.

Better Together

  • The entire island and its story are open in seamless online co-op for up to four players, and friends can drop into your world at any point without breaking your session. Your character, skills and loot stay with you whichever world you play in.
  • Coordination matters more than firepower. One player draws a Tank's attention with fireworks while the others work its weak points, or a Seeker is silenced before it can call reinforcements down on a bunker entrance.
  • Every mission and location works just as well alone. Solo play leans harder into stealth and patience, and the empty island is at its most unsettling when nobody has your back.

Uncover What Happened

Notes, answering machines, military logs and radio broadcasts scattered across Östertörn slowly explain where the population went and what the machines are really for. The trail leads through churches, farmsteads and deep underground facilities toward a truth the Swedish military would rather have kept buried. Pack your rifle, listen for the whine of servos in the trees, and take back your home one bunker at a time.
